Firefighters expertly sliced the roof off a car to start a hard-hitting campaign to save lives and cut injuries on West Yorkshire’s roads.
They used specialised hydraulic-cutting equipment to demonstrate how they respond to serious crashes to rescue occupants who are trapped and often badly injured.
The exercise in Market Place, Bingley, yesterday marked the start of the month-long campaign Distraction Devastates, which aims to encourage drivers to take more care and be aware of other road users.
Since 2005, West Yorkshire Police have been using a national system to identify factors that contribute to impacts for personal injury accidents in the county.
The statistics up to last year reveal the main cause of accidents was of drivers failing to look properly (24 per cent), followed by failure to judge another vehicle’s path or speed (11 per cent), and poor turning or manoeuvring (seven per cent).
