A man is fighting for his life in hospital after he suffered serious head injuries in a pitched battle in a Bradford street.

Residents have told how two vehicles were deliberately rammed into each other in Feather Road, Barkerend.

A number of men were then seen running down the street armed with crowbars.

Police said the injured man, who is in his 20s, remained in a critical condition last night following the attack last night.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Officers were called to Feather Road at 9.45pm to reports of a fight.

“Police attended and a man in his 20s was found with serious head injuries. Enquiries are ongoing.”

The injured man was initially taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary for treatment before being transferred to a specialist unit at Leeds General Infirmary.

A detailed examination of the scene was yesterday being carried out by detectives and forensic officers.

A cordon sealed off a long section of the road. A dark, five-door Saab was parked at an unusual angle across the middle of the road.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said: “I saw a car smashed into a wall. It tried reversing.

“Then a Land Cruiser came they were smashing into each other. The Land Cruiser reversed and drove off. Then two men ran down the street with crowbars. I didn’t see anything after that.”

Another resident, who also did not want to be named, said: “There was a man chased in a car. Some guys from a different area.”

Councillor Mohammed Jamil (Con, Bowling and Barkerend), the Deputy Lord Mayor of Bradford, said: “This is a very serious matter.

“Such gang violence is totally unacceptable and this behaviour needs to be punished. We need to be operating zero tolerance and we will work with the police and community leaders to make sure that such incidents are prevented as much as possible.”

The fight follows violence in nearby Harewood Street in May when police arrested seven people after an armed brawl. Police are not believed to be linking the two incidents.

One resident said: “It’s worrying. I’m thinking of moving out.”
