Bradford Council is seeking to evict travellers who have set up illegal camps near to Shipley and Baildon.

Travelling families, who have moved caravans onto land at Poplar Farm, near Kings Road, Bradford, were yesterday given 48 hours to move. A spokesman for Bradford Council’s gipsy liaison service said they may face court if they refuse to leave.

Two more eviction notices are being prepared to serve on travellers who have set up illegal camps on land in High Bank Lane, Shipley, and in Coach Road, Baildon.

“The notices should be processed and served within the next couple of days,” the spokesman said.

The travellers are believed to have moved about a dozen caravans and trucks onto land at High Bank Lane, near Northcliffe Golf Club, on Friday.

Nobody from the club was available for comment.

A spokesman for Bradford Council’s gipsy liaison service said: “We have served a Notice To Quit on travellers illegally camped at a site at Poplar Farm, near King’s Road, Bradford. If they don’t leave within 48 hours they will have to appear in court. Similar notices are being prepared for travellers camped illegally in High Bank Lane, Shipley, and Coach Road, Baildon.”

Paul Marfell, Baildon parish council chairman, said there had been a complaint about the illegal camp from a resident living near Coach Road.

He said: “We understand the concerns of residents but I’m not aware of there being any trouble.

“It is unfortunate travellers still have a bit of a bad name, especially after we had the great experience of the gipsy carnival in Baildon Green this year.

“Hopefully, events like that will help to promote good feelings between the communities.”

Travellers were recently evicted by police for camping illegally near Bingley Grammar School using a field off Queens Road.
