Carers’ Resource launches novel car recycling scheme to boost fundraising

A Bradford charity is serving up a “bangers and cash” initiative as part of a novel fundraising drive to boost its vital work across the district.

Carers’ Resource, which covers Bradford from its new base in Shipley and Airedale and Craven from its Skipton office, has provided support to more than 10,000 unpaid carers and vulnerable people since its launch 15 years ago.

To accelerate its fundraising work, it has now become one of the first charities in the county to team up with Giveacar, a social enterprise which collects unwanted and unused cars for charity – turning scrap into cash.

Regardless of their condition, cars are collected free-of-charge nationwide by Giveacar and sold through an online auction, or disposed of at an authorised treatment facility. Proceeds from the sale are donated to a charity of the car owner’s choice, or one of the Giveacar’s partner charities – such as Carers’ Resource. Even if the banger is scrapped, it still nets the selected good cause £40.

“We are thrilled to be one of the first chosen beneficiaries of this ground-breaking ‘green’ scheme,” said Anne Wells, marketing and fundraising coordinator of Carers’ Resource.

“As well as a great recycling initiative, it also gives us access to an untapped source of income – enabling us to take our work even further into the heart of the Yorkshire community. Each car donated raises an average of £80.”

Many car owners want an easy and completely free way to get rid of their old car. Giveacar will help them to do this in a legal and more environmentally-friendly way.

The scheme is intended to discourage those irresponsible owners who may consider abandoning their cars, spoiling the appearance of the local environment and also costing local taxpayers’ money to remove and dispose of it.

Tom Chance, chief executive of Giveacar, welcomed the partnership with Carers’ Resource. He said: “The DVLA reports that two million cars are taken off the road, yet only one million cars are disposed of at an authorised treatment facility. If you ring a number which you saw on a lamppost, there is every chance your car will be picked apart, then left to rot, causing considerable environmental damage.

“At Giveacar, we only use authorised facilities that recycle a minimum of 85 per cent of the weight of your vehicle.”
