A group of doctors building a hospital in Pakistan, with the help of money raised by Telegraph & Argus readers, is providing vital aid to victims of floods in the country.

The Midland Doctors Association UK (MDAUK) has a doctor stationed in badly-affected Peshawar, and is setting up an emergency field hospital.

A spokesman for the organisation’s flood relief team, which has so far raised £15,000 for the victims, said: “Time is of the essence to save lives from the ensuing high risk of cholera and other deadly infectious diseases. Even if we save the life of one child, it will be worthwhile.

“MDAUK have the medical expertise to make this happen.”

The group hopes to have vaccinated 1,000 people by the end of the week.

MDAUK was formed after a devastating earthquake struck close to Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-governed Azad Kashmir, in 2005.

About 87,000 people were killed and thousands were left without access to medical facilities.

The T&A teamed up with the Lord Mayor of Bradford’s Kashmir Earthquake Appeal Trust to build a hospital in the region and nearly £82,000 was raised. A ward is to be named after the T&A.

Work on the hospital is continuing – the foundations have been laid and pillars at the front are now under construction. The doctors are now getting medical supplies to those affected by the floods – the worst to have hit the country.

An estimated 14 million people are affected and about 1,600 people are believed to have died.

In areas surrounding Peshawar and Nowshehra, dozens of villages have been washed away and thousands of families are homeless, MDAUK has said.

The doctors estimate a cholera vaccination costs £1 or £2 per person and water-purification equipment for a family about £100.
