Flames leapt eight feet from the ground after a fire in an underground box of electricity cables.
Flats in Valley View, Shipley, were left without power after the box caught fire at 11.30pm on Wednesday.
A spokesman for Shipley firefighters said: “They will have heard a bang and there was an eight-foot flame coming out of the ground.”
It is thought the fire was caused by an electrical fault.
