A deli owner forced to change the name of his shop by a TV chef with the same name has opened up as Cheese and Chutney of Saltaire.

Matthew Coxon, who had called the Bingley Road shop Coxon’s Kitchen, was asked to come up with a new name by Alan Coxon, who had registered “Coxon’s” as a trademark. He said he had been flooded with ideas for new names since the Telegraph & Argus reported his story in June.

One former Bradfordian even called him from Scotland with a suggestion.

Mr Coxon said: “We’ve got lots of new customers. We think the name really screams out what we are all about.

“We’ve been here 20 months and people come in and say they didn’t know we were here. And I still answer the phone as ‘Coxon’s Kitchens’ sometimes!”

He said the shop had taken some unusual inquiries including one about a wedding cake made of cheese.

Cheese and Chutney of Saltaire will become a chutney specialist shop with around 100 different types on sale.

Mr Coxon thanked customers for their suggestions on a new name. “We’ve got all sorts of ideas from customers,” he said. “Somebody suggested Cheese and Chives, people have suggested names like Matt’s Kitchen.

“I even got a guy ringing up from Scotland who used to live in Bradford. People have been very supportive.”

TV chef Alan Coxon, whose appearances have included Coxon’s Kitchen College on the Carlton Food Network and Ever Wondered About Food on BBC2, contacted Matthew earlier this year asking him to come up with a new name.

The new signs have been mounted and Cheese and Chutney of Saltaire will have an official opening on Saturday, July 31.

The event will include wine tasting, chilli jam tasting and ten per cent off all cheese and chutney.
