World Cup fever has hit Bradford with shops, pubs and businesses in the city pulling out all the stops to show their support for the competition before it kicks off on Friday.

Harrison’s Fisheries in Harrogate Road has decorated its interior with flags and footballs from countries competing in the tournament.

Matches are to be shown on a TV in the shop and each time England scores a goal (excluding penalties) a customer in the store will be given a voucher. World Cup toys will also be available for children.

David Greasley, who owns the business, said: “Instead of focusing on just England, we wanted to focus on the whole tournament. There’s been so much bad news about recently, the World Cup is uplifting. When people come in the shop they want to know which countries the flags are from. It’s amazing how many people have come in and asked.”

Meanwhile, Bradford Council leader Councillor Ian Greenwood has confirmed the St George’s flag will be flown at City Hall while the national team are playing.

He said: “Unless there is some other protocol, when England are playing a union flag will be flying alongside the cross of St George on City Hall.”

Conservative group leader Councillor Anne Hawkesworth has called on the authority to show all of England’s World Cup games in the city centre following an announcement that the big screen in Centenary Square cannot be used due to its proximity to City Park construction works.

She said: “I fully understand the reasons behind not showing the live matches on the normal big screen, as the Council has done during previous tournaments.

“But I think we must at least examine what possibilities exist for hiring a screen which could then be set up on the other side of Centenary Square where there is still plenty of space and where there are no obvious health and safety risks to spectators.”

Coun Greenwood said: “The fact that it’s difficult to show it is entirely due to her incompetence in the first instance. She was a portfolio holder with responsibility for this a few weeks ago. I think it would be helpful to try to ensure that we can show some of the World Cup games in the later stages of the competition, but we are unable to do that at the moment.”
