An MP is demanding regional development agency Yorkshire Forward be scrapped amid suggestions that northern quangos could survive while their Southern counterparts are disbanded.

Shipley Tory MP Philip Davies said he was concerned the body may be given a “reprieve”.

Speaking in Business, Innovation and Skills questions in the Commons, Mr Davies said: “It is just as unacceptable for the unelected and unaccountable Yorkshire Forward to spend £300 million a year of public money as it is for similar organisations in the South of England.”

Business Secretary Vince Cable said regional development agencies would be changed to be more effective.

He replied: “The language of ‘reprieve’ is not quite right. RDAs will change their nature. They will become local partnerships.”

Included in £6.2 billion government savings announced last month was £270 million of cuts from RDA budgets.
