Michelin-starred TV chef Alan Murchison will cook up a treat for diners in Saltaire tomorrow.

Scotland’s star of the Great British Menu will plate up a five-course feast for patrons of Vicars Cafe-Bistro.

Half the sold-out evening’s proceeds will go to the Red Fund which helps people in Zimbabwe affected by HIV.

Mr Murchison said: “I am delighted to be joining the team at Vicars Cafe-Bistro for such a good cause. Vicars is a real community bistro with a great history and I look forward to visiting and meeting the local people this weekend.”

Vicars, so-called because it was opened by two vicars – the Reverend Andy Bowerman and the Reverend Jimmy Hinton – runs as a cafe through the day, a bistro on Friday and Saturday evenings and a centre for community activities including a knitting group, a book club and Gracespace Church.

Manager Ruth Fisher said: “Our bistros are always unique. The chef comes to talk through the menu at the beginning of the evening and everyone sits at long tables and are served in one sitting so it is very warm and friendly.

“It is no overstatement to say that Alan is one of the best chefs in the country and we are really grateful to him for his very kind offer to cook for us.

“We hope that on Saturday our customers, many of whom are regulars, will have a great evening and it’s a wonderful way of raising money for the Red Fund which helps people in Zimbabwe affected by HIV.”

Volunteer staff member Lewis Kelly, 17, of Bowling, is studying hospitality at Bradford College.

He said: “My dream is to become a chef and I get to work with a chef who has made it to the top of his game. I’m really excited.”
