A Bradford man who raped a 16-year-old boy after meeting through an internet chatroom, has been jailed for five years.

Waseem Anwar, 20, lost his self control and forced the teenager into sex, then punched him in the face, and stole his mobile phone.

Judge Scott Wolstenholme, jailing him at Leeds Crown Court yesterday, said the incident resulted from a date with the victim.

“You and this young man both clearly had homosexual feelings which you wanted to explore,” the judge said.

“I don’t take the view that you set out to rape, but once you were in contact with him, in a quiet spot in your car, you lost your self control.

“He was very frightened. He suffered very badly and is still suffering.

“In mitigation, you are still a young man with no previous convictions. The incident may have started out consensually, then crossed over to a serious offence.

“The aggravating features are that, having concluded the attack, you gratuitously punched and injured the young man and took his phone.”

Anwar, of Carlton Drive, Heaton, had pleaded not guilty to rape, theft and assault causing actual bodily harm but was convicted after a trial at Bradford Crown Court. The jury cleared him of a further allegation of rape and causing engagement in sexual activity.

The offences took place at a park in Shipley in 2008.

Anwar’s barrister, Rick Holland, said he was a young man, suffering Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and autism, who had difficulty coping with normal life.

Judge Wolstenholme said Anwar would be on licence when he was released.

He made a Sexual Offences Prevention Order prohibiting him from approaching or communicating with the victim and said he would have to inform police indefinitely of where he was living.
