A TEACHER'S wedding day has inspired a project that is spiralling into the event of the year.

When Threshfield School teacher Liz Summers tied the knot last summer and became Mrs Duncan Roberts she never envisaged it would bring together a local community.

The entire school is now busy planning its own wedding in which the 106 pupils will play all roles, from bride and groom to waiting staff.

Headteacher Helen Jarvis explained: "The big day is on March 31, but the important learning will take place between now and then.

"In addition to the subject based work we will be having competitions, an exhibition for the local community and will produce a special commemorative newsletter to celebrate the event."

An Enterprise Day was held last week, attended by Wendy Taylor of North Yorkshire Business and Education Partnership.

She said: "Many schools have carried out small RE projects based on a wedding theme, but Threshfield have created a really inspiring scheme of work."

She has liaised with staff to create a budget and a school wedding company has been set up with the intention of making a profit.

Infants teacher Pam Hall said: "Enterprise in any form is new to them. They have learnt how businesses need paying for their services because it's their livelihood."

Local businesses have flocked to help out with the big day.

Skipton hotel Rendezvous is providing a function room and training pupils to act as members of staff and Threshfield florist Wendy Hutchinson, of The Hedgerow, has shown pupils how to make posies and bouquets.

Even Craven Herald photographer Stephen Garnett has stepped in to lend a hand. He will be leading a photography workshop.

Chairman of governors Peter Huff said: "One of our school aims is that children remember significant moments from their life at primary school and this wedding project will certainly be remembered for many years by the whole community."
