Patients past and present were in high spirits at a children's party held by Airedale Hospital to celebrate 50 years of the NHS.

People of all ages went to the party on Sunday, including four generations of one family. Sandra Barrett was born on July 5 1948 - the same day the NHS began life - and she was accompanied by her mother Ethel, 87, daughter Adele, 27, and three-year-old grandson Ellis. She told us: "We all had a really good time and Ellis seemed to enjoy himself with all the other children."

The children were entertained with a disco and party games, as well as a magician who performed tricks. Business service manager Barry Rogers said: "It was nice to see people of all ages there."

Staff on the children's ward who sent out the invitations, were on hand to help, and Mr Rogers applauded their dedication and hard work, saying: "The staff deserve a lot of credit for the way everything has gone."

The party is one of many celebrations the hospital has planned to mark the golden anniversary of the NHS, which began life in July 1948. They include themed parties marking each decade since the 50s, and to celebrate Airedale Hospital's own history, staff are starting with a 70s day.

The Keighley News is planning a 50-year jubilee supplement to mark the event. If you have a story to tell about the NHS call either Sylvia Thompson or Kevin Hopkin-son at the Keighley News on 606611.
