Glusburn screenwriter Simon Beaufoy stepped into the limelight this week when his smash-hit film The Full Monty scooped four major Bafta awards.

The film received accolades for the Academy's Best Film and the Audience Award for the most popular film. Robert Carlyle was voted best leading actor for his part as Gaz, and Tom Wilkinson, who played Gerald, won the award for best supporting actor.

Simon's delighted parents, Madeleine and Roger, watched Sunday's awards ceremony on television at their home in Walker Close.

Madeleine says: "It's so nice to see a British film being acknowledged. The film has gone around the world and made a lot of people laugh. It's absolutely marvellous that the film got recognition from its home country.

"Making the film was such a team effort and that's shown by the fact that the producer, director and Simon all went up to collect the awards together. That really says something about the film.

"It was a lovely evening for all of us - like a true Hollywood glitzy experience!

"My son's delighted but he's now got a lot of hard work to do. He's actually quite relieved the Oscars and the Bafta awards are over, so that he can get down to the work he's doing at the moment."

Simon has just finished his next comedy - 'Among Giants' - which is also set in Yorkshire. It stars Pete Postlethwaite and is due out on general release in September.

His next project is directing the film 'The Darkest Light', which he also wrote. Again, it's set in Yorkshire - this time in the Pennines.
