THE Gazette's appeal to raise cash for an autistic Ilkley boy has reached the £1,000 mark.

We launched Robert's Ray of Hope Campaign two months ago to ensure crucial treatment for three-year-old Robert Sime continues - and this week the fund was given a major boost of £500.

The donation came from a source, which wishes to remain anonymous, to help Robert's parents meet the bill of £18,000

a year for his one-to-one

therapy.

Robert's dad Harry said: "We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the fund so far and for their support."

The toddler, of Gilstead Way, Ilkley, started the intensive Lovaas programme last September to develop his communication skills so he can have the opportunity to attend a mainstream school.

Autism is a developmental neurological disorder and typical autistic children do not communicate or make gestures.

Last week Dr Jan Almaas, a trained Lovaas consultant, worked with Robert to assess his development and the way his tutors were working with him.

"It was essential we obtained this input from a consultant experienced with working with children who have progressed by being on this programme," said Mr Sime.

"All of Robert's tutors really benefited from the workshop and we were encouraged by the consultant's view that Robert is progressing well and should successfully complete the programme."

The Craiglands Hotel gave the consultant two nights' complimentary bed and breakfast in support of the Gazette's campaign. Mr Sime said he was particularly grateful to Frank Moss, the hotel's general manager, for arranging the accommodation.

Children at All Saints First School also worked hard last week to help Robert's fund and raised £77.20 by holding a non-uniform day and a bun sale.

Robert's mum Lorraine said: "I was particularly pleased as I turned up with Jonathan and Robert to see so many children involved and I would like to thank all the parents for their donations."

Mr and Mrs Sime hope Robert will be able to attend All Saints when he is of school age, along with his six-year-old brother Jonathan.

The Gazette has joined forces with the Ilkley and District Round Table to ensure Robert's treatment continues and Tablers will be canoeing along the Leeds-Liverpool canal next month to boost funds.

Aerobics teacher Lynne Wright has organised a sponsored work-out afternoon for Saturday, July 18. Anyone wishing to take part can collect a sponsorship form from the Gazette office.

Anyone interested in helping out with the campaign can contact the Ilkley Gazette.

Donations can be made at any branch of Barclays Bank (00632511, sort code 201188) or left at the Gazette office. Cheques should be made payable to Robert's Ray of Hope Campaign.
