Record-holder Alfie Atkinson goes for an incredible fifth successive win in next Wednesday's White Lion fell race from Kildwick.

Atkinson's domination goes back to 1994 when the course included a riverside finish by the bridge. Organisers Keighley and Craven AC had to alter the course two years ago, extending the distance on Farnhill moor and now finishing outside the pub.

Riddlesden's Atkinson was still the one to beat on the new course, setting the 24.08 record for the four miles last year. The senior race is due to start at 7.30pm with the first junior race off at 6.30. Registration is at the pub with landlord Bob Turner sponsoring the race.

n Race of the day at Sedbergh Gala in the opening round of BOFRA's championship saw three Keighley and Craven AC runners fight it out for Under-7 honours. James Mason opened his campaign with a class win while the battle was on for runner-up spot.

Sean Troth, from Silsden, turned in fourth but overhauled Andrew Wiggan, from Cross Hills at the foot of Winder. Wiggan, who has just moved up an age-group, did spectacularly well to draw level in the sprint finish and dead-heat with Troth for second place.

The senior event was won by Andy Wrench and first woman was Jennifer Shuttleworth of Kendal.

The Under-14's was won by Andrew Wilkin.

The next Merrit and Fryers sponsored championship race is at Coniston on Sunday starting at noon with races for all ages from Under-9's to seniors.
