Two residents of a Steeton nursing home have proved it is never too late to fall in love.

Golden couple Gladys Hartley and Kenneth Fawcett met three years ago at Herncliffe Nursing home.

Kenneth says Gladys caught his eye and they hit it off straight away.

"We just got on really well and we've a lot of things in common," says Gladys.

Similar family backgrounds have bonded the couple.

"We've both had a hard life and we know what life's about between us," adds Kenneth.

And soon Kenneth, at 78 a toyboy to Gladys, who turns 80 next month, decided to pop the question.

"I was in hospital," says Gladys, "Having my big toe off.

"He came to see me and asked me there. I just said 'Yes' straight away."

Kenneth, originally from Barnoldswick, is widowed and Gladys, with roots in Halifax, has lost two husbands.

The couple are now resident at Steeton Court Nursing Home, also the venue for the ceremony on July 25.

Gladys will wear royal blue and white and Kenneth will arrive in a wheelchair to exchange vows in the home's conservatory.

They will then adjourn to the lounge for the reception.

Guests will include Kenneth's four sons and four grandchildren and Gladys's seven children (some of them step-children) and two grandchildren.

The couple will continue married life at Steeton Court.
