A man was shot in the back as he ran away from a rampaging mob in Bradford, a Court heard yesterday.

Destor Coleman, 27, known as Dextor, was shot in the back by a bullet from a .45-calibre pistol which was - according to prosecutor Michael Smith - fired by Safdar Khan, who denies murder and violent disorder.

At Bradford Crown Court yesterday Mr Smith said that after shooting Mr Coleman, Khan fired several other shots in the same direction.

During the disturbance on July 14 last year, Mr Coleman managed to run to the Young Lions Caf in Lumb Lane, but later died from his injuries before receiving medical help.

The court was told Khan and his companions then entered the caf, where they smashed windows and shouted threats to kill. Several people ran for cover, but were injured in the violence which followed.

The jury heard how the mob threw a pool table into the street and were only prevented from reaching diners upstairs by a barricade.

The gang, armed with guns, baseball bats and swords, then turned their attentions to a nearby bookmakers where they smashed the glass counter and TV screens, assaulted people inside and stole more than £1,500.

Mr Smith told the court that the incident on July 14 involved members of both Afro-Caribbean and Asian communities.

"During the course of violence, property was extensively damaged, people were violently assaulted and injured, money was stolen and one man was shot dead," he said. "Another man narrowly missed the same fate."

Mr Smith said the incident started on July 12 in Listers Free House in Manchester Road, Bradford.

Two customers in the pub were involved in an altercation with one of the defendants, Adelso Saws. Saws made threats to one of the men and put his hand under his shirt as if to place it on something in his waistband.

He then ran off with a friend after being chased by a group of about ten Afro-Caribbean men.

Safdar Khan, 23, of Tile Street, Girlington, pleaded not guilty to the murder of Destor Coleman, of West Bowling, and to violent disorder.

Mohammed Shaffi, 26, of Whetley Grove, Girlington, pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder of O'Neil Giscombe and to violent disorder.

Yousuf Khan, 26, of Tile Street, Girlington and Adelso Saws, 20, of Grange View, Chapeltown, Leeds, pleaded not guilty to violent disorder.

Mohammed Raja, 31, of Parkside Road, West Bowling, pleaded not guilty to robbery and violent disorder.

The case continues.
