Keighley people didn't let the grass grow under their feet when it came to naming the town's new bus station.

They inundated the Keighley News with suggestions for the paved triangle between the station and post office.

The most popular idea -- Townfield -- is now the triangle's official name and the station's postal address. Town centre boss Andrew Mallinson was present when a Townfield sign was attached to the bus station wall.

Townfield reflects the historic name of the site long before it became a bus station in the 1940s. Among local people who championed the Townfield name was Keighley historian Ian Dewhirst.

The name is believed to date back to medieval times, and a prominent Victorian building called Townfield House once stood near the present town hall.

Councillor Mallinson, chairman of Keighley Town Centre Management Group, is delighted the name was adopted.

He says: "It gives the area an identity. It helps make it a focal point and recognises Keighley's history. We hope to use Townfield for outdoor entertainment."

The Townfield name had to be checked by Bradford Council and emergency services to ensure it could not be confused with local street names. The sign was paid for by Keighley Town Centre Management Group.
