GOOD teaching has resulted in above average standards in a South Craven school, according to Ofsted inspectors.

A team of inspectors visited Aire View Infants School, in Elliott Street, Silsden, in November.

Its report describes the school as larger than average in which the governors and staff are committed to creating an effective learning environment.

The report says the headteacher, Vicky Bottomley, provides motivational leadership, which is well considered and clear, and its staff work hard to improve and develop the school's performance.

The school provides good value for money and pupils achieve above average standards in English, mathematics and science as a result of good teaching.

The inspectors says pupils are eager to learn because they find lessons and other activities interesting and their very good attitudes are the result of the commitment by all staff.

The school was last inspected in 1998 and improvements in teaching quality have resulted in its current strengths, the trend being above that seen nationally.

The inspectors also noted that children in the foundation stage are attaining at a higher level and most children in reception are expected to meet the required goals and a significant number will exceed them by the end of the year.

Teaching planning has improved although the inspectors noted that in some lessons, work was not matched closely enough to pupils' abilities and these pupils did not always achieve as well as they could.

"There is still room for further development to ensure that all pupils can always achieve well. Good systems have been developed for the assessment, monitoring and tracking of pupils' work throughout the school. The school is now reviewing these arrangements and looking to improve them still further," said the report.

Headteacher Vicky Bottomley said: "We are delighted with the report as it has recognised our many strengths while at the same time supporting our view for further school improvement.

"The staff, governors, parents and volunteers, along with the very strong community links we have established, all contribute to making Aire View Infant School the very special place that it is.

"I personally am proud and feel very privileged to be a part of such a dedicated team. The children have proved, yet again, that they are a credit to the community of Silsden.
