Phil Godfrey isn't underestimating the significance of a Pudsey Congs victory at home to Woodlands tomorrow in the battle of the top two in the Specialist Ducting Supplies First Division.

Woodlands' league representative says: "If Congs win it will be a massive step towards them winning the title, with all due to respect to Cleckheaton."

Congs, bidding for a record-equalling fifth successive crown, are 12 points ahead of Woodlands with eight matches to go, Cleckheaton being a further point back in third.

Godfrey added: "But if we win it will make it more interesting. We would like to win because we want to win the league, and it would also put down a marker for the Priestley Cup final (the sides meet at Congs on Sunday, August 29)."

Some clubs are jealous of Congs' ability to win trophies, but Godfrey doesn't count Woodlands among them.

He said: "We admire Congs, and are one of the few clubs that have a lot of time for them.

"Admittedly, we want to be like them, and everything we have done in the four years since we joined the league has been towards that end."

Godfrey also admires Congs' strength in depth, saying: "They have no passengers, and even their so-called lesser players, and I won't name them, contribute week in, week out."

One thing that both teams have in common, however, is a settled side.

Godfrey added: "Congs don't make many changes - I believe Barbar Butt doesn't play every week for example - and we have 11 regulars, plus Adam Rushworth and Jason Wharf, who play occasionally when someone is unavailable."

Congs skipper Matthew Doidge also has great respect for Woodlands, saying: "They are a good side - they have got to two cup finals and are second in the league."

Doidge will also be keeping one eye on Woodlands' overseas player Safraz Ahmed, who has the two fastest fifties in the league this season (18 balls and 21 balls).

The Congs captain said: "He is a bowler who occasionally plays a big-hitting innings.

"He strikes the ball so well, plays his shots all the time and when he hits it it goes a long way. The only way to keep him quiet is to get him out!"

As for his own side's form, Doidge confessed: "We have managed to contain most sides with the ball despite being without Naveed Rana ul-Hassan.

"But the fact that Glenn Roberts and myself are getting so many not out scores in the middle order probably means that we aren't doing enough with the bat in the top order."

Bottom-club Undercliffe must start winning matches if they are to avoid the drop, beginning with their home clash against fifth-from-bottom Baildon, who now have double the points of their opponents.

Spen Victoria, 11 points from safety themselves, are at Saltaire, while third-from-bottom Mirfield are at Hanging Heaton.
