It might seem an unlikely snack to indulge in as part of a health kick.

But a famous Bradford company is hoping to transform the perception that crisps are always unhealthy - with the launch of a ground-breaking new unsalted variety.

World-famous Seabrook Crisps, which is set to unveil a fresh look as part of an overhaul of its business, will launch its new unsalted crisps tomorrow, to mark Yorkshire Day on Sunday, August 1.

The company said it was making the move in response to growing demand for the product from its famously-loyal customer base.

And it follows increasing calls from the Government for food manufacturers to cut salt levels in their products.

Market leading brand Walkers has come under particular fire and featured in a Commons report on the obesity crisis in Britain's young people.

It has also been criticised for using sports presenter Gary Lineker to front its advertising campaigns.

Seabrook tried out its new product at its stand at the Great Yorkshire Show and said the feedback was favourable.

Managing director Greg Kopacz, who joined Seabrook earlier this year from a leading supermarket firm, said he was confident crisp fans would take to the new variety.

"Recently our customers have requested an unsalted Seabrook Crisp, and we are simply responding to demand," he said. "The product tastes great either on its own or with dips and we hope that it will appeal to people looking for products without salt, as well as crisp lovers everywhere."

The Telegraph & Argus revealed earlier this year how Seabrooks is set to undergo a major transformation as part of a £4 million revamp of the business.

The Duncombe Street-based company is currently building a major office development and has invested in new plant and machinery in an effort to keep up with growing demand.

The launch of the new unsalted product, which is due to go on sale tomorrow, is one of the major innovations in the history of Seabrook which was founded by Charles Brook in the immediate post-war years.

It has grown into one of Britain's best-known food brands with a strong customer base, particularly in the north.
