Signs go up to promote Bradford City of Film events

Seven new road signs to officially announce Bradford as the City of Film have been going up on routes into the city centre.

They mark Bradford’s designation as the world’s only UNESCO City of Film and they have been unveiled in the week that the city is celebrating its status. City of Film will start at a civic reception tomorrow to coincide with the opening of Bradford International Film Festival.

Councillor Anne Hawkesworth, the Council’s executive member for environment and culture and City of Film board member, said: “This is our chance to celebrate this wonderful status and promote Bradford’s great film heritage and also the potential that the status gives to the city and district.”

Restoring the Odeon would be a great way of doing that.

With you on the Odeon destruction this Council does not make sence inallowing the New Victoria Cinema/theatre inside it to be destroyed.
Leeds is about to restore thier 1920's cinema the Majestic back to its former glory.
All Bradford Council can do is demolish and leave giant holes.

A better sign for visitors into the city would be "Caution 50% of drivers uninsured, enter at your own risk" ;-)

Bradford is such a pathetic city! We have a football club that barely ever tastes sucess but has a ground that only ever gets full thanks to the away supporters, we have a successful rugby league team that plays in a stadium that is too small and is not fit for purpose, we have some beautiful buildings in Bradford - right next to some disgusting ones, we have care homes that are being threatened with closure because the council can't afford them, pot holes in most roads around the city, a park costing £20m+ in the centre of the city that no-one wants, really bad transport connections (worse if you use public transport, zero/very little growth in the city (even when not in a recession), roadworks all over the place because of this new park in the throat, a shopping centre that has been on the cards for the past 10 years and been 'under construction' for about 5 years, constant plans for regeneration and artist impressions to show what it will look like (and when it is realised, they never look like the pictures) and not forgetting leaving buildings like the old Odeon without making a decision of what to do about it.
.
Who is at the centre of all of this? Bradford Council. Now they want to distract us and take our minds off how badly we are being shafted by having this pointless city of film that will do nothing but please a vast minority of the citizens.

Being the 'City of Film' is clearly another positive for this city, but the design of the sign is very poor. It is cluttered, it doesnt clearly advertise the fact that Bradford is the 'City of Film', and the word 'Bradford' should surely be much larger.

The attendancies at the football club (Bradford City) that "barely tastes success" still comfortably exceed those of the Bulls. The existing Bull's stadium is more than adequate for a minority sport watched by their small crowds. Pouring yet more ratepayer's money into Odsal would be a massive misuse and waste of scarce resources. And how do you know "no-one" wants the City Park? I think you'll find that the majority of Bradfordians will welcome it when completed. And do you really believe that being the 'City of Film' is a Council distraction? You are either a wind-up merchant or an idiot. Bradford isn't a pathetic city, although some of it's moaning citizens are!

Heads up, I think basil fawlty could be delusional.
.
I've not heard one person say they want the park, even business people are sceptical about any benefits it could bring, those the council have brought out in press releases to date have all had a vested interest in the scheme. I've not been down to Lynfield Mount, maybe there are a few loonies, drugged out of their eye balls that think the park is a good use of £24 million (then £100,000’s per year thereafter), then again they probably believe the water jets are flowing with champagne, that the trees will be made of toffee, that Councillor Naylor is the next coming of Christ and that Bradford is a multicultural utopia devoid of social problems, poverty and a lack of employment.
.
If the council cared about the City of Film accolade surely the way to show they would be to keep and restore the Odeon cinema and make it a showpiece? But no, better to flatten it and put up a hotel with more apartments, because Bradford needs more apartments to add to the hundreds of currently vacant ones doesn’t it? Hello?
.
The only business sector making a profit in the city centre are glaziers boarding up the windows, such as the recently opened City Foods on the edge of Centenary Square which is already closed down and boarded up.

I have to disagree........BCFC have nearly 10,000 season ticket holders and the numbers of away fans are small. Apart from that you are correct, but if the Bulls want a better stadium then they should pay for it themselves.

However Bradford City of Film is a good thing. I hear the Planet of the Apes is about to be filmed on the Westfield site.

Maybe we should have another sign which says "THIS IS THE ICONIC 5,000 SEATER THEATRE/ CONCERT HALL WHICH BRADFORD COUNCIL WANT TO DEMOLISH" That would be nearer the truth
