Support seen as crucial if Saltaire traffic calming bid to go ahead

Transport planners have laid out proposals to improve safety and cut congestion at one of the district’s worst bottlenecks at the beginning of a major consultation.

Residents from across the district looked over the Council’s £4.3m-plans to remove Saltaire roundabout and replace it with traffic lights.

Designs for the new layout – which include blocking off Clarence Road and Albert Road – went on show for the first time on Saturday.

They were chosen from 19 options during a series of meetings between residents, officials, consultants Arup and Metro, West Yorkshire’s transport authority.

Under the new proposals, traffic to and from Hirst Wood will be able to reach Bingley Road via new traffic lights at Hirst Lane.

There will also be a new “public realm” – a paved pedestrian area in front of The Old Tramshed in Bingley Road.

Many who visited the exhibition at Hughes Bakery in Hirst Wood, approved of the proposals.

Jim Staveley of Ashley Road, Bingley, said: “I think the plans are great. I’m sure this will improve safety.”

However, others were more sceptical, particularly over claims traffic flow would improve.

Michael Lewis, 92, of Tower Road, Saltaire, said: “The problem started in Bingley and that has been moved to Shipley after the Bingley Relief Road. The only solution would be an Aire Valley motorway.

“It will be an improve-ment but there are still big problems.”

Shipley Councillor Kevin Warnes said it was important the scheme received public support. If it does, work could begin next year.

The plans will be on show at Victoria Hall, Saltaire until March 16.

A neighbourhood forum will be held on Tuesday, March 16, at 7.30pm at Victoria Hall to allow people to add their comments.

Councillor Hawarun Huss-ain said: “There has been a fantastic turn-out. The sheer number of people shows that there is tremendous interest about what will happen next.”

It's clear to anyone who's ever been to Saltaire that something needs to be done about traffic at the roundabout. What isn't clear from what I've seen is what happens to the many cars that use Albert Road to collect children from the school (in the main incredibly thoughtless parents!)?

Currently people park along both sides of the road - including across other peoples drives so that they don't have to walk more than about 50 steps to the school yard. If the top of this road is pedestrianised won't it mean that the road will be full of people trying to do (austin powers style) 3-point turns in and amongst the parkers?!

I am also aware that something needs to be done about the traffic situation at Saltaire roundabout - but £4,300,000 ?? Where do they pluck these numbers from ??

Quite probably but they wont be holding up the mainstream commuters.

Is it beyond the wit of T&A to print this plan in the paper or a link to them? It is 2010 now, that is how we get information, not a trek to the bakery. Bear in mind also that most people who use this route do not live in Saltaire.

Only 4 cars in the T&A artist impression where are all the cars that in real life travel through there?

Well, I found some information on the site suggested by albion - see http://www.bradford.

But I'm just more confused now - the prefered option shown there on page 8 required the demolition of the petrol station shown in the artists impression shown here in the T&A.

In the report a few places below this report (from where I got the link) there is mention of the plan to demolish the petrol station and create a traffic loop, but that plan has been shelved because they couldnt get the required funding.
I think the plan in the above report might make things smoother for a while but it isnt really the answer to the problem.

Thanks for that, very interesting, the paper should be doing it though.
