Police target bad drivers around Bradford in a crackdown

Parents driving their children to school have been the target of a two-week police operation across Bradford.

Road policing officers have been out in force at school drop-off times, catching out mums and dads breaking the law.

The officers have been stopping errant parents, warning them and issuing fixed penalty fines to get their message across.

Today was the last day of action as part of the fortnight’s operation but drivers are being warned it is not the end – and they are being watched.

Police were waiting outside St Paul’s Primary School, Wibsey, yesterday as it opened its gates to arriving pupils.

While the majority of parents parked safely on the roadside there were plenty of others pulling up on double yellow lines, not wearing seat belts – and one who managed to drop off their child without actually stopping at all.

One parent complained there was not enough parking space to make dropping off and picking up safe.

Until police cones were given to the caretaker to block off the entrance to the school gates, some drivers were even using it as a turning point despite it being the youngsters’ main entrance.

Another driver who was issued a £60 fine the day before for not wearing a seat belt, was still not wearing one yesterday.

PC Bob Hoyle said: “It’s beyond belief. He got a warning this time but he could have got £120 in fines in just two days.

“You get parents who make their children put seat belts on but they don’t bother. That’s not being a good role model.

“It’s an education thing. Drivers are being very apologetic when we stop and talk to them but it’s their and other people’s children they are putting at risk.

“Chatting on mobiles, not wearing seat belts, parking illegally is bad on any road but even more hazardous outside a school.”

St Paul’s head teacher Catherine Haigh said because her school was opposite St Winefride’s Primary on St Paul’s Avenue there was “double the issue”.

She said: “We remind our parents through our newsletters to park safely and legally and think about our neighbours. At the end of the day it is their children and we would not want to see any child or parent involved in an accident.

“Some of our parents will challenge drivers if they spot something unsafe. We all need to set a good example.”

So he got a warning, even though it was the second time he wasn't wearing a seat-belt. What a shambles the police are.

Police should get to Bradford Moor Primary, will get plenty of cash because the car drivers won't have seat belts on and no tax and insurance. But will be driving their large BMW's and Merc's etc etc.

What's wrong with pulling up on a double yellow line if you are only dropping someone off? It's perfectly acceptable.

And why fine a bloke the first time, and then just give him a warning the second? There's no point in the warning if a fine didn't work. Hopefully, he'll get the message when he goes through his windscreen.

And even though I don't even know Bradford that well, I bet they weren't targetting the right areas.

I live opposite a primary school in Manningham and the standard of driving by parents has to be seen to be believed. Seat belts, WHAT seat belts. 5 or 6 kids in one car, no child seats, Drivers on their mobile WITH their kids in the car, card reversing into the school gates to turn round, nearly knocking other kids down.
Kids getting out of the car on the side away from the kerb, not even looking before they open the door. Parents parking on the yellow zig-zags, locking the car up and taking the kids into school, double parking and blocking the road - are the police there - NO!
Some of the worst live within 200 yards of the school gates, but they still bring the kids in the car - it's unbelievable!
Then of course there are also the drivers who definately cannot drive to save their lives and parallel parking - HAH - how did they ever pass a test?

'mad matt' obviously knows what I am talking about...Unlike the police, local council or government. Welcome to Bradford, probably the next 'Northern Ireland' experiment.

precisely! And what do the authorities do about it?
NOTHING, 'cos they're scared of upsetting the lawbreakers.
It's about time that the laws were enforced - they are there to protect the majority agoinst the actions of a few (very selfish) idiots!

and what about the latest 'impossible to police' idea - 20MPH speed limits outside schools ?
Some of the powers that be in this town, live in a dream world !
The police and parking wardens have been up here a handful of times over the last few years and when they are hare and VISIBLE, all the drivers behave themselves (more or less) so it's quite obvious that the parents DO know the law, but just choose to ignore it.
Does it take a child to be killed in the street before something is done?
Code word is 'film-here' THAT is the answer - stick up a camera and catch the b+++ards !

I am a St Pauls parent, and no I don`t drive my kids there, we walk every day come rain or shine (that`s what wellies and coats are made for!) I am fed up with the problem. People stopping over the crossing points, so the crossing lady can`t allow people to cross or see to step out into the road. After school is even worse when they are all parked there from 3 o`clock to get a spot right outside the gate!! this is a country wide issue and really needs to be sorted.
