Killinghall Primary School pupils aid earthquake victims

Children at a Bradford primary school were so touched by the plight of young Haitian earthquake survivors they collected hundreds of pounds for aid in just one day.

The youngsters from Killinghall Primary School in Killinghall Road, Bradford, made £845 from a non-uniform day, which will pay towards two shelter boxes.

Each box, which costs about £500, contains a ten-man tent, a cooking stove, blankets, toys, an axe and saw – enough to sustain a family for about six months.

Idle and Greengates Rotary Club, which has organised the appeal will send the two boxes to Haiti.

Carol Garnett, of Killinghall Primary said: “The children felt that they had to do something because of the scenes they have seen on the news, particularly the children going without, which really got to them.

“We asked the parents if they wanted to donate as well and it was just a fabulous response.”

Tony Taylor, president of the Rotary club, said: “We were truly amazed with the amount of money they have raised and, as a result, our members made up the money so that it was enough to buy two shelter boxes, which we will send to Haiti.”
