Bradford and Bingley traffic brought to a standstill

Gridlocked traffic brought a nightmare for those struggling to cope with the morning commute around the Bradford district today.

Some travellers reported journey times of an hour and 40 minutes to drive the seven miles from Bingley to Bradford city centre.

The repair work at Ireland Bridge - set to continue for six months - is being partially blamed for pushing traffic on to different routes around Bingley, causing particular congestion around the Bingley By-pass.

Routes into the city were choked with traffic long after the usual rush hour period - even as late as 10am cars were bumper-to-bumper along Toller Lane.

But there were also delays south of Bradford city centre, with people travelling into Bradford along routes from Calderdale and Kirklees reporting long delays.

Were you caught up in bad traffic this morning? Let us know, either by posting a reply below or emailing us your details on newsdesk@telegraphandargus.co.uk with the subject message “traffic”.

Just 1hr 40 min? It took 2 hours to drive from Bingley to Bradford on Monday.

Its like this everyday! It takes me a minimum of 1hr15min to drive from Bingley to Bradford (6miles) every day.

Probably as there wasn't a gritter in sight again as usual, heavy snow predicted for this afternoon as well. But the council will of course expect you to pay the increase on council tax to pay for the gritting we are not getting.

Plenty of gritters around Saltaire and Shipley including the pavements.

NO !!!!!

What happened was, there was a convoy of stray cats just casually walking on the main road causing the congestion, something about a silent protest over the extortianate prices of Whiskas and IAMS.

Couldn't agree more.

I run or cycle 4.5miles to and from work everyday. I beat the bus.

Get of your backside people!!

I wouldn't dream od spending 2 hours in a car for a 6 mile journey. You could do that in 30mins on a bike.

More fun and better for you.

All very well if you have a job that doesn't require a car.
.
Or if you live in a part of Bradford where a bike isn't practical - Queensbury, top of Baildon, cycling back up there after a full day's work?
.
Or if there's a bus route from where you live to where you work that wouldn't take a couple of hours and a few changes.

Anyone reading this and thinking they might want to try to cycling as an alternative, would be welcome on the Aire Valley Bike Bus, - it's not a bus it's cyclists riding together between Keighley and Bradford each Wednesday.

To be honest, the prospect of icy roads was too much for me today, but I understand 3 or 4 regular riders were out and about today.

How about a folding bike? Zoom down the hill in the morning from Queensbury, then fold the bike up. Get the bus to as near home as possible ont way home then cycle the rest of the way. Cheaper and quicker.

What a pointless article! What about a few reasons for the holdups - otherwise this is a non-story.
BTW - lets get off the "I'm better than you because I use a bike" rubbish. For so many reasons bikes are simply not an option for many - and the same is true of public transport. Ok if you live on the Skipton line and work in the centre the train is a **** good option, but even then many need a car for the rest of their lives and it makes not one jot of economic sense to leave it sat on the drive during the week and pay yet more money to use alternatives. If the bike or public transport makes sense for you thats all well and good - some of us though either cannot afford the luxury of having a dormant asset on the drive or just cant make public transport work for us.
Being holier than thou discredits the whole environmental lobby!

For ages I made excuses to myself why cycling to my office in Little wasn't practical, but after Christmas I knuckled down and did it and now I've found out it's definitely the quickest, cheapest and best way for me to get to work.

The journey home uphill was hard for a few days but I soon got used to it. It's great! I wish I'd seen the light sooner.

I presume some could have but many bus journeys could just take as long due to changes etc so most stick with their cars.

Also aren't these buses using the same routes? So won't they also be stuck in this traffic.

Biking is great if you can have a shower at the other end otherwise there no point in sitting at work all day stinking of stale sweat.

Train is a great idea if you live within walking distance of a train station

Situation dictates peoples traveling habits for example how is someone with two children at two different schools supposed to catch a bus or train or even cycle and get the children to school on time and get to work on time.

Its simply a failure of the council to plan these outcomes, they have traffic surveys all the time are they not learning anything.

The traffic is not helped by the bus companies cutting up pavements and block parts of the road for days at different bus stops rather than getting the work done before moving onto the next one.

Thee Voice of Reason, Up above says...
1:46pm Wed 3 Feb 10

Part of the traffic problems are stupid things that should have been resolved but were ignored.

Take the bus stop coming onto Toller Lane off the Duckworth Lane roundabout. Before there was space for the bus to pull in and any cars behind to overtaken and not block up the roundabout. Then cars started parking at the bus stop so the bus was forced into the middle of the road. Instead of towing the cars off for parking on double yellows at a bus stop they were ignored and the bus stop was extended into the road. Ok cars can't park there no more but at times it can be nearly impossible to get round.

Also with regards to getting the bus, what is the point if idiots are sat in their cars blocking up the bus lane?

What I would like to see if people getting off their fat arses and walking children to school instead of clogging up the roads in 4x4's during rush hour to take their children to a school 2 minutes away.

I'm sorry, but the comments about cycling making you turn up to work sweaty are an utter myth. Okay, yes, it may depend somewhat on the distance and amount of effort you put it, but I assure after cycling to work I do not sit at my desk all day stinking. I arrive at work actually feeling fresh, alert and invigorated. As opposed to my pallid colleagues who probably got more sweaty than me in frustration at the jam they've been sat in.

Im all for the goverment giving some kind of discount on those zippy little mopeds. If folk could afford one of them think how much time, fuel/carbon emmisions and road/parking space could be saved. Granted not great in bad weather but if they were cheap enough you could have one as well as the car. Theres nothing more damaging for an engine, or polluting than stop start driving. And frustraiting as a driver. If I ran a company I would certainly look into buying a fleet of these things for my staff.

@Mike Strutter - No, cycling a couple of miles when you're vaguely fit does not in the slightest result in you needing to shower. Even in July. And the breeze in your face definitely beats the stifling heat on buses and trains in summer.

I work 18 miles from home but drive in. I cycle regularly on an evening for at least 10 miles and sweat like a pig and that's how I like it. at leat I have a good work out but couldn't do it on a morning to work, but wish I could

I think the government should force insurance companies to automatically provide insurance cover for a moped for free when you pay for car insurance.
You can't drive both at the same time so the insurance co's won't be out of pocket.
Mopeds are cheap enough with tax at £15 per year.
If everyone who drove a car also had the option of riding a moped through the traffic I reckon the roads would become much less overcrowded almost overnight..
