Bradford Council groups now have same number of seats

A Bradford councillor has switched to Labour after quitting the Tories following a race row over the selection of the next Lord Mayor.

Arshad Hussain (Toller) resigned from the Conservative group more than a week ago after he failed in his bid to be selected as the district’s first citizen. He had expected to be successful in the secret ballot as he was the longest-serving candidate.

But Coun Hussain has now announced he will sit with Labour on Bradford Council.

The move leaves both groups with 36 councillors on the 90-seat Council.

He said: “My first priority as a politician is to serve the people of Toller to the best of my ability. I also have a responsibility to take a view about the way in which the district is being led.

“Over recent years the Council has been run more and more like a personal empire. Too often decisions have been made purely on the basis of personal political interests rather than doing the right thing for the district.

“After a period of deep reflection I have concluded that the Labour Party is best placed to secure the improvements that I want to see for Toller and for the district as a whole.”

Councillor Ian Greenwood, leader of Labour group, said: “It has become clear to many people, including myself, that Arshad has become increasingly disillusioned by the direction taken by the Conservative group over recent years.

“He has always been a hard-working, conscientious and diligent councillor and I have no doubt whatsoever that he will bring that same dedication, commitment and service to the Labour Party.

“I look forward to working with him on behalf of the people of Toller and Bradford district.”

Councillor Kris Hopkins, Council leader and leader of the Tory group, responded to Coun Hussain’s comments about his leadership by saying: “Just a few weeks ago, Coun Hussain sought selection as the Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Bradford East.

“He followed this up with an attempt to be chosen as the Conservative nominee as Lord Mayor of Bradford, and then Deputy Lord Mayor. “His failure to be voted into any of these positions resulted in his outrageous, unfounded and deeply offensive allegations of racism and, now, his apparent conversion to socialism.

“I am sorry to say that his motivations throughout have been based entirely on ‘personal political interests’ and ‘doing the right thing’ for himself, not for Bradford district. My Conservative colleagues and I will therefore take no lectures from Coun Hussain.”

In December Coun Hussain accused the Tories of discrimination when he lost the ballot for Lord Mayor to Councillor Peter Hill (Con, Worth Valley). He also lost out on the deputy role to Councillor Mohammed Jamil, who becomes the first Asian Conservative to take on a civic role in the district

It makes sense why Arshad the first Asian Tory councillor for Bradford made this decision.
The Tories have lost direction as to what to do with Bradford Regenration as they already turned Bradford city centre into a ghetto. After you made Bradford City Centre into a ghetto what 'strategic Review' will 'help' turn ghetto into a desert?
Any idea Councillor Hopkins and Cllr Hawks? Dont forget the 'Hopkins Hole' in middle of Bradford City Centre.
This is not the first time Tory Party is accused of racisim/discriminati
on there are many examples which I will allude to later after I come back from work.
Be prepared for few Bradford Tory revelations

got to laugh at this one ...lol. I Posted that ARSHAD HUSSEIN was in politics for his own selfish gain. When he was unsuccessful in obtaining the lord mayors job.To date my views are still the same and he has proved it by moving over to labour. He will now attempt to build up his selfish portfolio,in his gratifacation to achieve what he wants. He talks about the council doing things for personal political interests instead of for the community, you should know this ARSHAD HUSSEIN,by the selfish attitude you showed when refused the lord mayors job,and now by putting your tail between your legs and running to labour.I feel that he has to retire and be elected again into labour.I am just thinking did he jump before he was pushed.

Y does it have to be cllr hussains fault that he has been treated unfairly time and time again? He won his seat as arshad hussain and not a tory in 1995 when he was the only one to gain a seat from labour in the whole of england. So the ? Of resigning is quite pathetic. As 4 cllr hopkins, this will be a very big disaster for ur group in the innercity wards. Cllr hussain is without a doubt a v well known and respected politician and that's not just bradford but keighley 2.it takes a lot for anyone to give up 14yrs of hard work. I think the Tory comments articulates exactly what Mr Hussain is.

He has decided to jump ship because he has for a while now flaunting himself as the new Lord Mayor.... expecting to get this based on the fact he is well...Arshad Hussain.

On finally accepting he is not getting it he decides its better to cross the divide...and become a socialist.

He has no idea on politics, he is only interested in himself and he will get voted in by a community who vote in mass through political persuasion based on tribal, geneological, geographical, cultural and religious lines.

It is an utter disgrace that this man is in politics in the first place... The Asian community (sorry to start the race thing, but he started it) needs second generation, educated, independent, free thinking people to become part of the political mainstream...people with a cause and purpose. Step up wherever you are....

That's a load of nonesense albion! Its such a petty answer. The man gave 14 years of service to his constituents, this city and the tories! To be treated like he has been by the tories, any individual would leave them. And 4 ur info, no1 in asian community ever voted for tories b4 he came along, nice way to be treated after introducing the tories to the asian community. As for the labour group, they had the 1st asian lord mayor in 1985, that's 25yrs ago and the tories never. Doesn't that say everything?
