Holme Wood mugger jailed

A vicious street mugger who left one of his victims with a fractured cheekbone has been sentenced to a seven-year extended prison sentence.

Daniel Lowther, 21, of Meadview, Holme Wood, Bradford, was given a four year eight month jail term with a 28-month extended licence period for three robberies.

Judge Shaun Spencer QC told Lowther he used “serious and gratuitous violence” when he attacked Michael Pollard as he walked to Asda on Rooley Lane, Bradford, on November 17.

Mr Pollard, in his 50s, was punched in the face, kicked and robbed of his wallet and phone by Lowther on Burras Road, West Bowling, at 3.30pm.

Lowther, who was with a youth the police want to trace, denied kicking Mr Pollard.

Mr Pollard suffered a fractured right cheekbone and extensive bruising and swelling to his eyes, nose and cheeks.

Police found the stolen phone and a blood-stained top when they arrested Lowther after a struggle.

Prosecutor Dave MacKay told Bradford Crown Court yesterday that Lowther grabbed a woman’s handbag, pulling her over, as he ran away after robbing Mr Pollard.

He also admitted robbing a takeaway driver in Denby Mount, Holme Wood, Bradford, on August 28.

Lowther has 35 previous convictions for 74 offences, including assault, house burglary, damage and breach of an Asbo.

His probation officer said he posed a high risk of causing serious harm to people.

Lowther’s solicitor advocate, Ian Hudson, said his client led a chaotic lifestlyle and had a problem with alcohol addiction.

He had admitted all three robberies and written a letter to the judge expressing remorse.

After the case, Detective Constable Tony Squires, of Bradford South CID, said: “Daniel Lowther carried out two robberies in a short space of time and left one of his victims with nasty facial injuries, including a fractured cheekbone. The other victim was shaken.

“I am pleased with today’s sentence and hope it gives him time to reflect on his actions.

“We are still looking for another male who we believe was with Lowther during the robberies. He is described as white, aged 16-17 years old, and 5ft 7in tall.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact DC Squires at Bradford South CID on 0845 60 60 606 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
