Father Christmas might like to carry all his presents in one sack – but Bradford residents are being reminded that there are lots of alternatives when it comes to getting rid of rubbish.

Bradford Council started its Christmas recycling campaign today to remind people that it is important that everyone recycles even more of their extra waste this festive season.

The average family generates about 30 per cent more waste than usual over Christmas.

And much of it does not need to end up in landfill as it can be recycled. Homes are supplied with grey paper bins, blue-lidded bins for glass and cans, plastic bin inserts, bags for garden waste as well as wheelie bins for general rubbish. A list of what material can be recycled at the district’s eight recycling centres is available on the Council’s website at bradford.gov.uk, or by calling (01274) 431000.

Glass bottles, jars, cans, aerosols, paper, white card and wrapping paper can be recycled through a kerbside collection service. The campaign carries on until January 24.

Councillor Anne Hawkesworth, the Council’s executive member for environment and culture, said: “I hope everyone has a great time at Christmas but they should remember to jingle all the way to the recycling bin.

“Christmas is a lot of fun but we should be able to enjoy ourselves without putting pressure on the environment.”

Some households’ waste collections will be disrupted over Christmas.

Waste normally picked up on Friday, December 25, and Friday, January 1, will now be collected on the following Mondays – December 28 and January 4, respectively.
