The Co-operative has vowed to fight Tesco plans to build a superstore in Bingley.
A supermarket war has broken out after Tesco applied for permission to build a 40,000sq ft shop on the former Auction Mart in Keighley Road.
A Co-op spokesman said the company, which has a new store in the 5Rise development, had put in “a strong formal objection” to the proposal. He said: “Such a development would have a significant and damaging effect on the vitality and viability of the town centre.”
Co-op has joined the battle against Tesco after campaigners said the shopping giant’s presence would destroy the soul of the market town.
