A mountain bike enthusiast had his “pride and joy” stolen from under his nose by a thief who laughed as he dislocated his knee in a freak accident.
Jem Mallison, 25, was left writhing in agony in the rain when he hurt his knee while trying to get on the bike after visiting the Jobcentre in Bradford city centre yesterday.
Mr Mallison said the thief laughed as he tried to get up and stop him stealing his bike.
The Bradford College student said: “I unchained my bike and two lads approached me and one said ‘that’s a nice bike, what did you pay for it?’.
“I steered them away from the fact that I paid a fortune for it and said it was worth £150. I went to throw my right leg over the seat, to get on it and ride off, and my knee just came straight out of the socket.
“I said to one of them ‘could you ring an ambulance, I have dislocated my knee’.
“One of them sort of looked concerned and the other one laughed and he picked my bike up.
“He just rode off on my bike.
“The other one was already on a bike and they rode off together up towards the courts.
“The other lad actually came back and said ‘I can’t believe he’s done that’.”
The bike is a brushed metal Marin B17 hard tail with Magura shock absorbers, large Snafu pedals and a white rear mudguard.
Mr Mallison was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary and has been told he will need keyhole surgery for a broken kneecap with a piece of floating bone.
He said: “The bike was my pride and joy and it just got taken away from me while I couldn’t even get up.”
A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said the suspect was a white boy, about 13 years old wearing dark tracksuit bottoms, a dark top and a white woolly hat.
Anyone with information about the incident has been asked to contact the Bradford City Centre Neighbourhood Policing Team on 0845 6060606.
