Kilimanjaro climber Mark Nixon feels on top of the world

A man who survived six major operations in six years to remove cancerous tumours from his body has succeeded in his bid to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Mark Nixon 32, reached the summit of Africa’s highest peak on Saturday at 6am.

His mother Julia Nixon, a retired swimming teacher, of Baildon, said: “He reached the highest point called Uhuru at 5,895m, and said the view from the top was spectacular.

“He said he felt quite emotional when he reached the summit, as the trek was tough and because he was determined to do it for himself and the fundraising.

“We’re so proud of him. He has now descended and is having a well-earned beer! He is humbled by all the support he has received for Macmillan Cancer Support, which at this point is now £2,250, and I know there are more donations to come.

“What can I say? He is quite simply remarkable and inspirational.”

Mark, of Rawdon, was diagnosed with grade four testicular cancer at the age of 26 and was given a 50 per cent chance of survival.

He endured nine gruelling cycles of chemotherapy, but had many tumours in his lungs, liver and abdomen which did not respond.

But with the expertise of doctors at St James’s Institute of Oncology in Leeds and The Royal Marsden Hospital in London, he underwent six major operations to remove the tumours. The last one was carried out just four months ago to remove a malignant tumour from his neck.

He said: “I seriously think I have overcome something major and I am now getting on with my life. However, if I can help others in a similar position, then that must be worthwhile.”

Macmillan fundraising manager in Bradford, Mandy Child, said people like Mark were inspirational. She said: “I would like to offer thanks to everyone who supported Mark with this challenge.

“While supporting Mark you are helping Macmillan support people living with cancer.”
