Leeds United Football Club accused in Afghanistan tribute row

Update: Following publication of this article, Leeds United stated that it will be supplying 30 tickets to the Yorkshire Regiment for use among the families of the 12 servicemen, both Leeds United fans and Huddersfield Town fans, who will be honoured during the half-time interval of the game.

The parents of a soldier have had to fork out £60 for tickets to see him presented with a medal for serving in Afghanistan, after they say they were told there were no complimentary places for family.

A dozen soldiers will be presented with medals at a football match at Leeds United’s Elland Road ground – but their families have not been issued with tickets to watch the ceremony.

Now the parents of Private Christopher Jackson, who recently returned to his Cleckheaton home from Afghanistan, have hit out at Leeds United after they had to pay £60 to buy tickets for the game to see their son honoured.

The presentation ceremony, involving 12 members of the Yorkshire Regiment, is due to take place at half-time in the local derby against Huddersfield Town at Elland Road on December 5.

Ian Jackson, father of Private Jackson, said the actions of Leeds United were “below the belt” at a time when other clubs were providing the Army with up to 100 complimentary tickets to allow family members to watch such ceremonies.

A spokesman for Leeds United confirmed no complimentary tickets had yet been issued to relatives of the soldiers, but said no final decision had been made about the number of free tickets.

With the match fast approaching and fearing a sell-out crowd, Mr Jackson said he called the club to see if complimentary tickets would be issued to families and, when he was told they would not, decided to buy a pair. But he said he feared some families would be too late to get tickets for a game likely to attract a large crowd.

Mr Jackson said: “These medal presentations have been done before at Barnsley and both Sheffield clubs. Some clubs have given the Army as many as 100 free tickets for relatives.

“But the Army rang me to say Leeds have said that only 12 tickets will be issued and they are for the soldiers that are going to get the medals. Any relatives that want to go will have to buy tickets. So I rang Leeds United and spoke to a girl and she said ‘we are just supplying tickets for the soldiers’ so I bought two. I’m not particularly bothered about having to pay for a ticket. It’s just the principle. We thought it was a bit below the belt.”

Private Jackson, who supports Huddersfield Town, returned from a three and a half month tour of Afghanistan on November 6 after being sent to the war-torn region as a battlefield casualty replacement in Operation Panther’s Claw.

Mr Jackson said: “My son was in all the hotspots. He had quite a rough time and was on the front line with the Welsh Guards and then The Light Dragoons.”

A Leeds United spokesman said: “At this stage, we have not decided what we are doing with tickets. There has been no message conveyed to the Yorkshire Regiment about how many tickets will be available. Arrangements are ongoing.”

Asked about Mr Jackson’s claim that someone at the club told him complimentary tickets would not be available, the spokesman said: “We don’t know who he’s spoken to. He could have been given second-hand information.”

But what's even more disgusting is the fact that our Boys are fighting a totally un-necesary war, and one that's for the Zionist Neo-Cons.

That's the tragedy.

A bit surprised it being at such a location.
Would have thought medals presented in an army location, or the army arranging a public venue. The family being given front row seats so to speak.
What next I fear the Queen knighting people at Elland Road?

I think we're all jumping the gun here. Read the last 2 paragraphs -
.
"A Leeds United spokesman said: “At this stage, we have not decided what we are doing with tickets. There has been no message conveyed to the Yorkshire Regiment about how many tickets will be available. Arrangements are ongoing.”
.
Asked about Mr Jackson’s claim that someone at the club told him complimentary tickets would not be available, the spokesman said: “We don’t know who he’s spoken to. He could have been given second-hand information.”
------
The company my partner works for is very unpopular with some people, and there has been blatant attempts to discredit it by claiming they don't support the troops, they won't send material out to the army, and soldiers are not welcome on their premises.
.
These were all proven to be a hoax, according to Snopes - a site dedicated to investigating such things, and the hoaxer apologised.
.
Now I'm not saying its the same thing here, but I think its easy for people to make their own mind up before reading all the article due its sensitive nature, and without official statements its too easy for rumours/stories/hear
say to develop.

I think there has been a very quick reverse by Leeds and they are now claiming that a decision hasn't been made yet. If that is the case then people at the ticket office should be kept in the loop. The quote talks about the ticket office working off second-hand information does that mean they are not told things and just make it up as they go along?

The game is less than two weeks away, when were they planning to make a decision. By the time they do the game will be sold out.

Why kick off with Leeds United?
If the army want people to see their soldiers presented with medals then they should hold it in a public or army location, where they can let whoever they want in for free.

Kick off with the army, and not the private buisness.

What has this got to do with Bradford? Concentrate on issues in your own 2 bit town e.g poverty, immigrants, poor quality sporting sides.BCFC can only dream of support like Leeds and to a lesser extent Huddersfield.
If you want to read the truth read the LUFC website who are demanding a retraction from the T&A and given Ken Bates past form expect a writ!

If you had something to say I'm quite sure that you could have done it without slagging everybody off, this is obviously something you can't help, by the way you are banging on about how good Leeds united are and how rubbish Bradford is just shows your mentality, what has that got to do with the T&A printing a story about tickets being refused? In my book you are just an hooligan and like i said earlier a first class BELL END...Get a grip you saddo..

Why don't Bradford do something for the troops you could hand out enough complimentary tickets for the whole batallion and their relatives with the space you have at home games, having said that the neighbours might get a bit tetchy.

Maybe it is in the T&A because the family are from an area covered by the T&A and the family have got in touch with them.
The Army have these ceremonies at such games to connect with the public. It is the Yorkshire regiment and Huddersfield-Leeds been the biggest game this year in West Yorkshire has been picked for this area.
As for what is on the LUFC site, if you believe everything on there then more fool you. They said Ken owned the club, then he doesn't, then he can not remember if he does or doesn't.

Storck, City Centre says...
10:28pm Mon 23 Nov 09

I would also say that the comment on LUFC site and giving tickets looks like it has been pulled together after the T&A ran the story. If not why not just say that tickets were going to be given when the father rang Leeds ticket office, or when the T&A rang.
As I said before looks like a response after the T&A rather than anything planned. In which case for once I will say well done T&A.

Leeds United are giving 30 tickets to be used by the families of those soldiers being given medals.
The club has a long standing tradition of supporting the Armed Forces, hosting a large visit from the Yorkshire regiment to a match last season, and supporting various military charities on an on-going basis.
Perhaps the T & A could get something organised with Bradford City for any City fans who are receiving medals. Im sure most right minded people would support such an idea, or might it upset "the community"?

But before the T&A ran the story they weren't giving any tickets to the families. The father of one of the lads rang up and was told he would have to buy his own ticket. Leeds have only given tickets out due to this story.
Plus how do you split 30 tickets between 12 families. Do you get 2 tickets for the full game and 1 for half the game, swap over at half time. Or do you pick those 6 most deserving out of the 12 to get the extra ticket.
As for the venue, as far as I'm aware they are picked by the army.

Poor journalism, and typical childish responses from the town-folk of Bradford.

Fact is the story is untrue.

Wonder why BCFC never do anything like this for the Forces? Hmmmm, I wonder.

Yes euroboysie, best to keep the real reasons for this war out of sight and mind so you can make yourself feel proud that they are making the world a safer place for everybody. See what amnesty international has to say about the heroin production prior to the anglo-american invasion.

To be quite honest I think that the T&A should let everybody have their say, whether people like it or not, I don't agree with the T&A censoring anything, that's just not fair, and I also don't like how they only choose certain subjects to let people comment on, they should let people comment on every single article and not what they think might not cause offence...

Difference is we can fill it whilst you on the other hand never will and never have even when in the premiership, and i doubt you will fill your new 18,000 stadium at Odsal when thats built either. Good luck against Carlisle then you can look foreward to seeing a full house for a change. By the way 19,744 actually so get your facts right.

And I bet all the Thistle Hotel and Topman shirts were dusted off for that night, just like if we get you in the next round of the JPT.

Like I said, you have a fantastic home record and are clear at the top of the league. So where did the 20,000 go then?
