Hollywood A-lister Catherine Zeta Jones was so touched by a Bradford am-dram group’s invitation to its production that she felt she had to reply personally. And Debbie Carroll, of Bradford Catholic Players, admitted she nearly “fell off her buffet” yesterday when her phone rang and the film and stage star’s dad was on the line. The Players had invited Catherine and her husband, actor Michael Douglas, to their production of 42nd Street next month as the show will feature a costume she had worn when she played lead role Peggy Sawyer in a West End production of the musical in 1994.
Her father, Dai Jones, contacted Miss Carroll to ask for her address so he could forward a letter from his daughter apologising that she could not accept the invitation.
The actress is starring in Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music in Los Angeles but wanted to wish the cast good luck, in particular Katie Carroll, who plays Peggy Sawyer.
Miss Carroll said: “I nearly fell off my buffet when he called.
“I think it’s really kind to have remembered a little amateur dramatic society in Bradford when you are a world class movie star.
“We wrote to her agents never really imagining we would get a reply. I never thought our letter would be sent to Hollywood and she would read it. For her to have taken the time and trouble with her busy schedule was a really kind gesture.
“I think Catherine Zeta Jones was involved with amateur Catholic dramatic societies when she was younger, which may be why she wanted to get in touch.” The society has now invited Mr Jones to the show, which runs at the Alhambra from November 24 to 28. Tickets are available on (01274) 432000.
