Developers have vowed to push ahead with plans to give new life to a Grade II listed pub which had its roof destroyed in a suspected arson attack.
Last week’s blaze broke out at the Old King’s Head Inn, which dates back to 1820, at Allerton, Bradford, Part of the roof had to be cut away because the structure had become dangerous but building control experts at Bradford Council declared the rest of the building safe.
The pub in Allerton Lane has been plagued by vandals since it became empty two years ago.
After the latest fire attack, Councillor Valerie Binney called for the historic pub to be given a second chance – possibly as a hotel.
But planning permission had already been passed to turn it into four houses and two one-bedroom apartments.
Building another two three-bedroom houses and six two-bedroom houses with car parking on the site with Listed Building Consent was also being approved.
Now, Leeds-based developers B2 Property Group said it was still committed to developing the Old King’s Head Inn.
Architect Patrick Barrett said: “We are very much still committed to the development, it’s a fantastic site.
“We got permission last year to go ahead with our plans but it’s been on hold because of the slow-down in the economy. At one time we were doing three maybe four projects at one time but we’re having to take a leapfrog approach at the moment.
“We’re really hoping to start work at the Old King’s Head in spring – it will happen.”
Mr Barrett said his company had “spent a fortune” trying to keep the empty property secure.
He said: “I don’t know why the vandals bother with it because there’s nothing in there for them. We had to strip out all the furniture and carpets for insurance purposes.”
Coun Binney said: “I’m delighted the developers are still going ahead with the housing scheme – the sooner the better. Vandals have left the building a terrible mess, but that’s what happens with empty buildings.”
