A 21-year-old man told a jury the teenager he is accused of violently raping smiled and kissed him goodbye.

Usman Akram said the 19-year-old, who was a complete stranger to him, was laughing after they had sex.

Akram, of Woodale Avenue, Heaton, Bradford, denies raping the woman three times after dragging her down stone steps off Sunbridge Road in the city centre.

He is alleged to have grabbed her in the street at 6.15am on April 26 after she had been at a nightclub. She was barefoot and wearing her party dress when Akram encountered her by chance while looking for a prostitute.

He told the jury at Bradford Crown Court he had drunk vodka at a friend’s house and visited a casino before making his way to the red light area.

He said the teenager was standing against a wall.

She told him she needed to get home and asked if he had any money.

Akram said he offered her ‘business’ for £10.

He told the court he had picked up prostitutes in the area before and had paid them that amount.

Akram said she took his money and ran away but tripped and fell near the steps, hurting her knees. He asked for his money back but she said: “What do you want? I’ll do anything.”

Akram said they went down the steps, she removed his tracksuit bottoms and they had sex. He claimed he did not use force and she did not scream or struggle.

He said he called a taxi for the woman, that she kissed him goodbye and he left her laughing and smiling.

He phoned for another taxi and was dropped off at Heights Lane, Heaton, where he bought a Pot Noodle.

The woman told the jury Akram pursued her down the street, overpowered her and raped her on steps leading down to Paradise Street.

She says he stifled her screams by putting his leather-gloved hand over her mouth.

She had been drinking and was without shoes, bag and phone.

The woman says cuts, scrapes and scratches to her legs, arms and back were caused during the attack.

The trial continues.
