Thousands of students starting the new term at the University of Bradford are being given important advice in a bid to reduce the spread of swine flu.

NHS Bradford and Airedale has teamed up with the university to make sure new and existing students are armed with the facts to help them avoid infection and know what to do if they suspect they may have the illness.

Specially-produced information leaflets will be in the students’ safety packs and in halls of residences. More advice will also be on the university’s website. In addition, the university has placed hand gel in its premises. Dr Nagpal Hoysal, a public health consultant with NHS Bradford and Airedale, said: “We know there is always a risk when you get large groups of people together like this, but the university has worked closely with us to make sure precautions are being taken.

“Swine flu has fortunately started to become less prevalent recently, but we know there is a strong risk it could become a much more serious problem this autumn and winter.

“And young people are amongst the groups who seem to be more susceptible.

“Students who have symptoms of flu need to stay at home and stop going to lectures until they feel better.

“It sounds really simple but the two most important things that everyone can do to help stop the spread of swine flu are to cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue, and throw it away as soon as possible afterwards, and wash your hands regularly with soap and water to kill germs, particularly after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose.”

Graham Seed, head of health and safety at Bradford University, said: “The health and safety of our students is our top priority and every year we make sure they are aware of any risks.

“This year, swine flu is a new risk but one we’re determined to do everything to minimise.”

Anyone across the district concerned they may have swine flu should stay at home and check symptoms online at the nhs.uk website and call the swine flu information line on 08001 513 513 for advice.

If you are still concerned call the National Pandemic Flu Service on 08001 513 100, where trained staff will assess you over the phone.
