A terrified teenager was grabbed in a Bradford city centre street, dragged down steps and repeatedly raped, a court heard.

The 19-year-old woman was barefoot and wearing a party dress when she was attacked in Sunbridge Road, Bradford, a jury was told.

Her screams were stifled when her attacker put his leather-gloved hand over her mouth, she told Bradford Crown Court yesterday.

Usman Akram, 21, of Woodale Avenue, Heaton, Bradford, denies raping the woman three times shortly after 6.15am on Sunday, April 26, this year.

Prosecutor Michelle Colborne said the teenager had been to a party and on to Lingards Nightclub in Westgate, Bradford, the previous night.

The jury saw CCTV footage of her leaving the club with her sister at 6am. The two get into a taxi but it stops on Sunbridge Road, several miles from the teenager’s home.

Miss Colborne said the girl stormed off with no shoes, handbag or phone.

“Drunk and bewildered, she ran up Sunbridge Road,” the jury heard.

Miss Colborne said the teenager soon began to fear Akram was following her.

She speeded up but he pursued her, overpowered her and forced her down stone steps near Paradise Street.

When she tried to escape after the first rape, Akram seized her ankles and dragged her back down the steps, it is alleged.

The jury saw CCTV footage of what the prosecution says is Akram fleeing along Paradise Street and across Water Lane after the attack. Miss Colborne said the teenager was dishevelled, tearful, and trying to flag down passing motorists.

She was taken to Lawcroft House Police Station but it was closed. She was then driven to Bradford Royal Infirmary.

Footage taken from a police officer’s head cam during her first police interview shows her on a hospital bed with cuts and scratches to arms, legs and back.

The petite teenager told the jury she feared her attacker would kill her. She said she had been drinking vodka and cider that night and was barefoot and crying after arguing with her sister.

She told how the stranger grabbed her from behind and was too strong for her.

“I was screaming and saying ‘Please don’t,’ and I was really scared,” she said.

Miss Colborne told jurors Akram claims the woman agreed to have sex with him for £10. She said they had to decide if she consented to have sex for money or was raped while helpless.

The trial continues.
