Most people just pop down their local for a quick pint.
But regulars at the New Inn in Main Street, Wilsden, can pick up local cheese, vegetables and even fish after it held the first of its regular outdoor markets this week.
Christine Schreck, who runs the kitchen at the pub, came up with the idea in a bid to turn the pub into a hub of the community.
She said: “In Wilsden, we don’t have a market and we’ve only got a couple of shops, so we thought it would be good to have some fresh fish and veg and it’s now triggered off something.
“Someone said could they come and sell cheese and we had seven stalls selling different things at the first weekly market.
“We’re now going to hold it on the second Monday of every month.”
The market, which also included artisans selling jewellery, is one of a host of weekly events organised by landlady Joanne Chappell since she took over the pub last November.
A knitting group meets there on Monday mornings and there is also a readers’ group.
Mrs Schreck said: “It is really important that the community feel that they can use the pub and we want to get people involved with the market and other activities.
“We hope to vary what is on sale at the market and if someone comes in with something really interesting to sell, I’m sure we can fit it in as well.”
