Supermarket giant Asda plans to create 350 jobs by building a new superstore in Bradford.

The company wants to create a store on a site formerly occupied by MFI in Bradbeck Road, off Cemetery Road, Lidget Green.

Asda bosses put the plans on display at Bradford’s Kirkgate shopping centre yesterday and said they had been inundated with enquiries from jobseekers.

The proposed store will have a 38,000 sq ft sales area, similar in size to the company’s existing Bradford store in Rooley Lane.

It will have 427 car parking spaces, including disabled, and parent and child spaces. It is also planned to have a filling station.

Philip Bartram, Asda property communications manager, said: “A new Asda store in West Bradford will bring a new, high-quality retail offer to shoppers and create up to 350 full and part-time jobs for local people.

“During difficult economic times, we will work closely with Jobcentre Plus and other agencies to target local job seekers.”

Asda has been considering further investment in Bradford for some time and believes the former MFI site is a great location because it is already designated for retail use.

Many of those who viewed the plans when they went on display yesterday said they were impressed by the scheme.

Hansa Majid, 18, of Manningham, said: “It’s quite nice and it’s in a great location because it makes it easier once you are in town. The other Asda stores are quite spaced out.

“With the recession going on at the moment, it’s good to know that jobs are still around.”

Denea Ameen, 18, of West Bowling, said: “The employment news is good. The university is not too far away if students want to travel to work at Asda.”

A further consultation event will be held from noon to 8pm on Tuesday at Girlington Community Centre, Girlington Road, Bradford.

People will have the chance to ask questions of the Asda team prior to a planning application being submitted to Bradford Council in about two weeks.
