Cleckheaton woman needs your help

Suzanne Celensu Suzanne Celensu

Beauty is in the genes for this family.

Suzanne Celensu is hoping to follow in the footsteps of her mum Zoe, aunt Gay and grandma Betty, all former beauty queens, when she takes part in the Grand Final of Miss Earth UK.

Suzanne, of Cleckheaton, is the next generation to take to the catwalk. Identical twins Zoe – the eldest by 25 minutes – and Gay were encouraged into competing in beauty contests by mum Betty, a former beauty queen herself.

In the seventies the Spink twins became the queens of beauty contests. Zoe was the first on the circuit and having seen her sister’s success Gay was keen to match it.

The pair travelled the world, filming in exotic locations and rubbing shoulders with celebrities, before retiring to concentrate on marriage and motherhood.

Suzanne is now carrying on the family tradition, having entered her first beauty contest four years ago.

An accomplished tennis player and sportswoman with a masters degree in business, Suzanne is counting on the public to help her win the crown by voting for her in the competition which promotes women who are ‘strong and effective advocates for Mother Earth’.

In her profile on the competition website, animal lover Suzanne, says: “I will always be a great believer in animal rights and will always do my best in keeping the world a more natural and healthier place to live.”

Suzanne’s environmental belief is that everyone can do their bit to save the planet.

“One person can make a huge difference on the Earth!” she said.

“If people can act in good ways that others will aspire to, such as being part of the Miss Earth organisation and competition then chain reactions can occur in order to spread good environmental behaviour from person to person and the world will become a better place. One person makes a significant difference!”

Air travel is a growing contributor to climate change carbon dioxide emissions from aviation could make up around 10 per cent of the UK’s total carbon dioxide emissions by 2020.

How does travelling around the World by Airplane to 'film in exotic places' 'spread good environmental behaviour'? Good luck in the competition anyway.

Just had to reply to the comments above because you are all being really unfair to this girl. Firstly to lonniejockstrap the article says that her mum and aunt travelled to 'film in exotic places' when they were beauty queens which I'm guessing would have been decades ago before anyone knew about global warming so you can't reasonably hold her responsible! As for the comments about her looks this clearly isn't a great photo as she isn't even smiling and it is taken at an angle which makes you look slimmer and when someone suffers from anorexia a photo like this would show bones through the skin. If you bothered to look at the second photo where she is with her family you would see I am right!
Good luck Suzanne and don't listen to these fools.

I agree totally with elastic_breaks, the rest of you are talking rubbish!
Good luck Suzanne.

The environmental angle sounds a bit spurious. Still, the usual 'I like to work with diasbled animals and aid world peace' guff is what beauty competitions are traditionally about (so no change there then). Nothing wrong with a cavalcade of cuties if you ask me: and this bird has got it goin' on! Good luck Suzanne!

The winners of the individual countries holding the Miss Earth competition are held in the Philippines!. How do you think the winners from the many different countries will get there?

lonniejockstrap I was unaware that the final competition was in the Philippines though this is the fault of the competition organisers rather than this girl. They would probably argue though that the raising the profile of environmental issues does more for the environment than the cost of the flights does harm.

I haven't criticised the girl in any way, in fact you will see I wished her good luck. However I don't take the Environmental argument for holding the pageant seriously. As for raising the profile of Environmental issues, well this is the first time I have heard of their 'work' and this is their 9th year of 'raising the profile'!

There are apparently 90 countries that take part in this pageant. Good for them and the girls that take part. For me it's just a way for the organisers to hold rediculous competitions based on peoples 'beauty'. And if “One person can make a huge difference on the Earth!” why would the organisers want around 90 of them to fly to the Philippines?

From just one Environmental website I quote:
'In order to exert pressure on airlines to genuinely cut carbon emissions it may be necessary for the public to demonstrate their concerns about air travel by refraining from flying'............'
A significant decrease in consumer demand for flights will send the message to the aviation industry that something must be done to improve on aeroplane technology'.

As an animal welfare campaigner I find it deeply troubling that someone who says they care about animals is engaging in such a sexist, patriarchal event as 'Miss Earth'. The exploitation and suffering of non-human animals is linked to the patriarchal structures we set up in society. Supporting such structures is actually perpetuating the abuse you say you are against.

On a serious note I can see there is indeed an irony in the supposed 'awareness raising' element of the competition and the method in which they are using to do it (ie all the airmiles that would be involved). I'm not entirely sure that James Lovelock would advocate such a competition in the name of 'Mother Earth'.
I have no issue with beauty pageants per se though (apart from those ones they hold for small children which are frankly creepy). Like it or not we live in an increasingly looks-based world and to rail against this sort of competition is, like, sooo 1970's...
Finally, re Mike's point about this being a 'patriarchal event'. I take the view that this idea is outmoded when taken in context of the wider world of fashion and beauty: women steer the agenda these days do they not? Although whether anyone would claim this as a victory for feminism is a moot point...
