A firm is offering free asbestos awareness courses for head teachers at schools in Bradford and Leeds.
Research by Drighlington-based Fibre Environmental Services research shows 16 teachers die on average each year from asbestos-related disease.
Barry Softley, managing director of the asbestos removal company, said: “I’ve been working in this industry for many years and I’m now experiencing colleagues and friends, 20 years on, who have developed asbestos-related cancers.
“From the onset I would like to help protect children against the harmful effects of asbestos and increase awareness of its use in schools by sharing my experience and knowledge.
“From a parents viewpoint I would like to ensure my children are being educated in a safe environment and the sad truth is that over 90 per cent of British schools still contain asbestos.”
Earlier this year, the Telegraph & Argus revealed that 500 public buildings – including more than 200 schools – had been found to contain asbestos.
