Road safety experts will be out and about in the district over the next two weeks in a bid to reduce the number of children injured while travelling as passengers in cars.
NHS staff and Bradford Council’s road safety team will be carrying out free child seat safety checks in supermarket car parks as part of a district-wide ‘Seat Belt On’ campaign.
The event follows a yellow ribbon day yesterday which saw children at Lapage Primary School in Bradford Moor tying yellow ribbon pledges to the railings of the school in a bid to encourage residents to support the campaign.
Last year, 1,041 drivers and 639 car passengers were killed or injured in Bradford. Thirty-four passengers were children aged four or under, and another 76 were aged five to 15.
Councillor Anne Hawkes-worth, Bradford Council’s executive member for environment and culture, said: “The Yellow Ribbon Day will help to show motorists that children and young people are serious about driving this message home that everyone should belt up when travelling on the roads.”
The ‘Seat Belt On’ campaign will see an ‘in-car’ safety consultant carrying out the checks and advising parents of anything that needs to be put right.
Hazel Ha, of Bradford and Airedale Community Health Services, said: “It’s important to get proper advice when you buy a car seat – people should ask the retailer to help them or contact their car manufacturer to see which seats best suit your model.”
Free car seat checks are available between 9.30am and 12.30pm, and from 1pm to 4pm at: Morrisons, Rushton Avenue, Bradford, on Wednesday, July 15; Morrisons, Mayo Avenue, Bradford, on Thursday, July 16; Sainsbury’s, Harrogate Road, Greengates, on Wednesday, July 22 and Asda, Manor Lane, Shipley, on Thursday, July 23.
