Take-up of healthy school meals across Bradford is increasing faster than most parts of the country.
Figures published by the School Food Trust (SFT) showed across the district 53.2 per cent of primary pupils and 35.1 per cent of secondary pupils had school meals in 2008/09 – compared with 52.6 per cent of primary and 32.2 per cent of secondary the previous year.
Nationally the increase was significantly lower with slightly more than four in ten (43.9 per cent) primary pupils and a third (36 per cent) of secondary students opting for the meals, compared with 43.8 per cent and 35.5 per cent in 2007/08.
Bradford Council executive member for regeneration, Councillor Adrian Naylor, said: “Bradford’s excellent take-up figure for primary schools reflects the focus that our school meals service has on establishing a nutritionally balanced approach to eating. We give all parents of new starters in reception class a pack outlining the benefits to be had from our modern professional service."
