Friends will give vehicle to Romanian health workers

Three medical workers will drive to Romania in an ambulance bought on eBay.

Mark Nicholson, of Airedale Hospital’s accident and emergency unit, Louise Gabrielli, of Keighley, who hopes to become a paramedic, and Samantha Taylor, of Bradford, who works at Leeds General Infirmary, will set off from Skipton and donate the ambulance to Romanian health workers.

The friends now need to raise £3,500 needed to fund the 3,000-mile trip.

On Friday, July 17, they are staging a fancy dress event at Laycock Village Hall and they are also hoping businesses will sponsor them.

Mark, 21, Louise, 18, and Samantha, 24, bought the ambulance from eBay, the internet auction site, for £500. The ambulance, which has 150,000 miles on the clock and which operated in Birmingham, will be taken to Romania, Europe’s poorest country, in August.

“It’ll be quite a journey,” said Mark. “We’re going through Paris, Rome, Munich and into Romania. We want to make a bit of a holiday out of it too.”

Once they arrive in Romania, they will work with Jubilee Outreach Yorkshire (JOY) to hand the ambulance over to a local health worker.

The charity has sent several former St John ambulances to the country.

Mark said: “People who sustain life-threatening injuries can wait for the next available ambulance and more than likely die in the process, or rely on friends and neighbours to drive them to hospital. As friends and neighbours are not trained paramedics, the outcome is usually poor.”

The event at Laycock will start at 7pm and will have an emergency services theme. Tickets cost £5 from the Turkey Inn, Laycock, and from reception at Airedale General Hospital at Steeton, near Keighley.

To sponsor the team contact the three at ebay2romania@gmail.com or joyworld.org.uk.

First of all:
Have you ever been in Romania?
Second of all: Where do you want to bring that ambulance? On the top of the mountains?
Third of all: Do you think that the Romanians need your second hand car? Do you know how much you'll have to pay for the registration due to the fact that it's old?
The conclusion: You paid 500 for the ambulance and now you need 3500 to fund the trip. If you want to visit some countries just say it like this. Romania is not the poorest country from UE. There are poor, rich and medium people. We face a lot of problems like corupcy, financial crisis, etc and like every country we have bad things and good things. Get out the box and see the real world. Don't feed your brain with the Romania's image from the past. I still can watch at CNN movies since 1990, with the same poor children and old people from the Romanian metros. something has changed and you are stii living in that period.
Good luck. Open your minds.

If Romania is the poorest country in Europe then Great Britain is the most naive of it.
How do you plan to spend those 3500 pounds ?
On hotels ?
Because the gas from UK to Romania will be no more than 400 quids even if you rent a trailer. I think the article is written by someone who knows NOTHING about Romania.
PLEASE, inform yourself before sending money to such idiots which under the coverage of making charity work is rising funds to sponsor their own trip. Better send goods with a lorry or a trailer instead of spending 500 on ambulance and 3500 on transport.
And as edelweiss_hvit was sayng, OPEN YOUR MINDS !

Why not concentrate on the needy in this country instead of turning the whole thing into a trendy adventure?

You take 3 kids, one derelict vehicle bought on eBay and designated as AMBULANCE , one online publication and what you get? A zero-information news about Romania. I'll let you take the article off your newspaper before making a laugh of it on my online publication which is zimbrul dot net.

Well guys...i don't want to be mean with you but just because Romania is the 'Europe’s poorest country' we completely renewed the ambulance fleet last year...Romanian government bought around 2000 Fiat Punto and Mercedes brand new cars. At some moment the problem was about not having enough personnel for all of them.
So right now i suppose our fleet is more modern then the English one.
Anyway thanks for your good intention of helping the 'poorest country of Europe'...Just a quick question for you:...in order to come to Romania why do you have to drive via Rome?...because of course this is not a pleasure trip only...no?

This article is designed for those who think is normal to pay 50 pounds for a 70 miles train journey, 3 pounds/hour just to keep your car on a public street, 2500 pounds to insure your car to drive, 3500 for a 3000 miles journey to Romania via Rome :)), 20 pounds a night to park your car on a motorway petrol station, millions of surveillance cameras, separate taps for hot and cold water for your bathroom sink(many times I burnt my hands).

At 3500 pounds to fund the trip it sounds more than a bit of a holiday as well:).if there was 1000 pounds costs, there is still 2500 pounds left for f**king good bit of a holiday.

Controversy erupted in 2002 as Plaid MP Adam Price exposed the link between UK prime minister Tony Blair and Mittal in the Mittal Affair, ……, sought Blair's aid in its bid to purchase Romania's state steel industry. The letter from Blair to the Romanian government, a copy of which Price was able to obtain, hinted that the privatisation of the firm and sale to Mittal might help smooth the way for Romania's entry into the European Union.
…The letter had a passage in it removed just prior to Blair's signing of it, describing Mittal as "a friend."
In exchange for Blair's support Mittal, already a Labour contributor, donated £125,000 more to Labour party funds a week after the 2001 UK General Elections,

Those People from Gatati are without jobs right now!!!!!
