Bradford man jailed for six years

A 21-year-old man has been jailed for six years after almost severing a car dealer’s hand in an horrific slashing attack.

Mohammed Ali suddenly lunged at Mohammed Javid Khan with a knife after arranging a meeting, Bradford Crown Court heard today.

After gashing Mr Khan’s palm, Ali chased him, shouting threats and trying to strike him again.

Mr Khan had blood pouring from a deep wound that needed emergency treatment and plastic surgery.

Ali pleaded guilty to wounding Mr Khan, 25, with intent to cause him grievous bodily harm on April 9 last year.

Ali, of Marlborough Road, Manningham, Bradford, struck while on bail for supplying heroin and possessing the class A drug with intent to supply. He admitted both the offences.

Prosecutor Jon Gregg told the court that drugs squad officers saw Ali dealing in Keighley Road, Bradford, on October 25, 2007.

They followed him to Marlborough Road where they found cash and ten street deals of heroin.

Mr Gregg said Ali and Mr Khan met outside Ali’s home because the defendant wanted to know who had smashed the windows of his girlfriend’s car.

Mr Khan denied all knowledge of the vandalism.

When Mr Khan lent into Ali’s car, the defendant lunged at him with what the Crown had alleged was a Samurai sword.

Mr Gregg said this was denied but it was some sort of sharp-bladed article.

As Mr Khan fled, he was struck on the behind with the weapon.

He was bundled into a car by friends and taken to a police station and then Bradford Royal Infirmary.

Mr Khan’s hand was almost cut through, with the tendons on his fingers severed. He needed rehabilitation at the hand clinic and had made better than expected progress.

Ali’s barrister, David McGonigal, said Mr Khan must have had some expectation of violence. A man with him was now serving a life sentence for murder.

Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC said photographs of Mr Khan’s “appalling” wound were not for the squeamish.

His hand was saved by his stoicism and the skill of surgeons.

Judge Durham Hall jailed Ali for two years for drug dealing and four years for grievous bodily harm, the sentences to run consecutively.

After the case, PC Dean Palmer said: “The public can be reassured that the police will always undertake a rigorous and thorough investigation into offences of violence.”
