Police are hunting a gang of stick-wielding thugs who beat up two men.

The victims and a friend, in their 20s and 30s, were returning home from a supermarket, when they were approached from behind by a number of white men and an African-Caribbean man.

The gang began a conversation with the men, who were Polish, and then started beating them with the wooden clubs. Police believe an iron bar may also have been used in the attack.

Two of the men suffered facial and head wounds and were treated at hospital. The third escaped injury.

The apparently motiveless attack happened on grassland near to the subway between Wakefield Road and Irwell Street, East Bowling.

Acting Detective Inspector Craig Lord, of Bradford South CID, said the men were subjected to a severe beating.

The tracksuited gang, who were mostly aged 15 to 17, are believed to live locally. The Afro-Caribbean suspect had a black and white scarf round his face and wore a red tracksuit.

Anyone with information about the attack at 2.30am today should contact Bradford South CID on 0845 6060606 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.

Police arrested a 19-year-old man who was this afternoon being questioned.
