Quick-thinking police have been praised for rescuing five children and six adults trapped in a smoke-filled Bradford flat.

Police got a call from a mobile phone reporting a fire at the back of shops at Millner House, off Greenway Drive, Allerton, but when they arrived saw a burning bin and other rubbish blocking a door leading to a ground floor flat.

The North Bradford Neighbourhood Policing Team officers used their own fire extinguishers to put out the blaze and break through the door.

They then managed to lead the people inside, believed to have been having a party, to safety - only one man needed treatment at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Fairweather Green Fire Station crew manager Jonathan Earl said lives could have been lost in the incident.

"The police did a great job acting so fast and getting everyone out," he added.

Scenes of crime officers were called to the incident which happened at about 12.20am today.

A 31-year-old Allerton man was arrested shortly afterwards on suspicion of arson with the intent to endanger life.

A further two men aged 18 and 24, were arrested today. All three were being held in custody.

Inspector Steve Greenbank said: "The officers responded quickly to the reports and were able to make an arrest. The swift actions of these officers undoubtedly saved lives."

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the incident to contact Airedale and North Bradford CID on 0845 60 60 606.
