Gordon Brown has stuck to his promise to step in and help get the stalled Bradford city centre Broadway shopping centre moving again.

Officials at Downing Street have contacted Bradford West MP Marsha Singh to discuss when a meeting could be arranged.

At Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday Mr Brown pledged to broker a meeting to explore ways of getting things started.

Mr Singh said: “I got a call from No 10 saying that as soon as the recess was over Gordon Brown would be in touch to organise the meeting with me.

“I will be asking Bradford’s other MPs to come to the meeting to discuss how we can move things forward. I was surprised and delighted how quickly I was called about this. I am extremely pleased this is moving on so quickly and look forward to the meeting.”

Construction work on Bradford’s £320 million shopping centre was supposed to be finished next year but Westfield, the world’s biggest shopping centre operator, blamed the recession for its decision to delay the Broadway scheme – leaving a gaping hole in the middle of the city centre.

A date for the meeting will be arranged when Parliament returns on Monday, June 1.
